Sunday October 7th

The final day of the Vans Triple Crown of BMX series is complete. The whole day was devoted to Street with 54 riders, split into 3 heats for the prelims. The prelims ran a little longer than scheduled but no one seemed to care, the riding was insane and the crowd kept the seats filled the whole time. The Street overall points going into this event was very close with 3 or 4 people in contention for the extra $10,000 so everyone had to do well in the finals for any chance of taking home the bonus.

Ryan Nyquist was in the best position to haved a chance at the title if he could place higher than Dave Mirra. Even with a 360 flip in his final run, he didn't have enough today and could only manage a 6th place. Dave was leading after his first run but his first run score was only enough for 3rd place today, still $3,000 though. Colin MacKay was on today and his 2nd run score actually tied Dave's best score and his other score put him into second as a tie breaker giving Colin 2nd place and $4,500.

The story of the weekend was Dennis McCoy, winning his first street contest in 5 or 6 years. Dennis had the best run he has had in years with lines that no one could believe. Dennis earned $7,500 for the win which will most likely go toward his double wrist surgery, scheduled for next week.

Dave also won the Street Overall title and another $10,000 bonus to add to his $10,000 bonus from Vert and all his other prizze money this weekend.

Saturday October 6th

The sun broke through the clouds today for the second day of the Vans Triple Crown of BMX. The day started early with Dirt Jumping and 40 riders were up and riding for 10 qualifying spots. After 3 heats the top 10 moved on to a 3 run final with a huge crowd that filled the bleachers and the hillside behind the course.

This event was big for deciding the Triple Crown overall Dirt champion since Ryan Nyquist wasn't guaranteed the title. Cory Nastazio still had a chance to catch him if he rode great and Ryan didn't. That wasn't the case though, because Ryan was unbeatable today. He not only put together a couple solid contest runs, he also went back to the starting hill about 10 more times to try harder tricks over the last set until the awards ceremony finally cut him off. His work paid off in the form of a check for $7,500 for the win and a bonus check for $10,000 more for the overall title. He still has street tomorrow! Joey Marks and Mark Aitken weren't far behind Ryan though and finished with 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Then we moved on to the Soul Bowl. This was a "Bonus" event at the Triple Crown Finals and 11 riders gave it a go for some extra cash. It was basically a vert contest but with no time limit for the runs. Koji Kraft beat himself up pretty bad trying every trick he had until he couldn't ride anymore which got him 3rd place and $600. Dave Mirra and Dennis McCoy had solid first runs but seemed happy with their rankings after the first round and did a kind of a doubles routine for their second runs, throwing those scores out and finishing 1st and 2nd place respectively.

Tomorrow is Street and there are a lot of riders registered. It should be a big day finishing with a unique final event, "mixed doubles" with a biker and a skateboarder riding together. We'll see how that goes!

Friday October 5th

The final round of the Vans Triple Crown of BMX started today and first off was Vert. With only 17 riders there was no qualifying rounds, only a final. This event would decide the overall Vans Triple Crown vert champion and the ramp and conditions were perfect for a great contest. The riders stepped it up and put on a great show. Dennis McCoy was the guy that had a chance to take the title IF he had a great contest and he went for it his 1st run scoring a 93 which ultimately was only enough for 3rd place and $3,500, not bad, but not what he was hoping for. 2nd place and $5,000 went to John Parker with a killer first run, including some solid airs and lots of technical tricks. Dave Mirra was leading the Triple Crown vert series going into this contest and had to ride well today to hold the title and he was up to the test. His first run 95 was enough to take the win and $7,500. On top of that, he also earned a fat check for $10,000 for the overall title too!

Tomorrow is Dirt jumping and a Bowl contest in the Soul Bowl that should be pretty intertesting too.
